Lunt or Walsh? Cowboys playing coy at QB

In the nine days or so since Wes Lunt suffered a knee injury in a win over Louisiana-Lafayette, Oklahoma State has kept the status of its starting quarterback under wraps, going so far as to not even reveal the exact nature of the injury.

With Texas looming on the horizon, that gamesmanship has continued.

On the Cowboys’ depth chart released over the weekend, Lunt and J.W. Walsh are listed as co-starters six days ahead of the Longhorns game. The Daily Oklahoman‘s Gina Mizell, who does as good a job as any beat writer in the country, writes that she “still expect[s] Walsh to start that game” against UT despite the current “OR” nature of the depth chart.

Lunt suffered the injury to his left knee early on in Week 3 and was replaced by Walsh. All the redshirt freshman did was respond to the bullpen call by completing 21-of-30 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns against the Ragin’ Cajuns in the first extensive action of his collegiate career.

If Lunt is indeed unable to go as some expect, Walsh would move on from the first extensive action of his collegiate career to his first start at this level. His high school coach was asked by Tulsa World if the stage would be too big for his former player.

“No,” said Denton (Tex.) Guyer High School head coach John Walsh. “It will be the biggest stage he has played on, but I don’t think big stages get to him. I think he has dreamed about this enough that he honestly feels like he is supposed to be there and I think that is how he will play.

And, yes, John Walsh is father of J.W. Walsh.
