Ohio State fills Vandy vacancy with San Diego State

Vanderbilt pulled a fast one on Ohio State and Northwestern last month when it sent a piece of snail mail to both schools notifying them that it was cancelling future games in 2013 and 2014. Northwestern went on to fill one of those open dates with Western Michigan. Now, Ohio State has filled its ’13 vacancy as well.

The university announced Friday it has finalized a home game against San Diego State to be played on Sept. 7. The Buckeyes were originally scheduled to play Florida A&M on that date, but the ’13 schedule has been shuffled a bit. The Buckeyes’ game against A&M will now be played on Sept. 21, and the previously-scheduled Sept. 21 game against Buffalo will now be the season opener on Aug. 31 -- the original date of the now-cancelled Vandy game.

“San Diego State has a fine football program and we are happy to be able to add them to our schedule,” OSU athletic director Gene Smith said. “We have had an excellent relationship with SDSU over the years with three exciting, competitive games since 2001.”

Ohio State has played SDSU three times before in 2001, ’03 and ’05, winning all three matches.
