Ohio State fans petition the POTUS for a pardon on bowl ban

Ohio State Buckeyes v Wisconsin Badgers Getty Images

As far as the BCS championship picture is concerned, there’s one undefeated team in college football: top-ranked Notre Dame.

But, thanks to some misguided finger-crossing by the university’s administration last year in the aftermath of “Tat-gate“, Ohio State’s currently spotless 11-0 record is only so in the eyes of the Associated Press‘ weekly top 25 poll, where the Buckeyes hold down a No. 4 ranking. The Buckeyes’ postseason ban means no shot at a Big Ten championship — though this year’s Leaders division trophy will be on display in Columbus — or a BCS championship.

Still, that hasn’t stopped some Ohio State fans from attempting one final (and desperate) push to maybe, possibly get the ban overturned. According to FOX Sports, a petition asking President Barack Obama to pardon Ohio State was created. Though the petition was eventually taken down by whitehouse.gov for violating terms of participation, FOX was able to capture the petition’s message, which reads as follows:

“The Ohio State University football team is one win away from an undefeated season. However, due to imposed sanctions, they are not allowed to participate in their conference’s championship game or the following bowl season. While a punishment for past indiscretions is to be expected, a bowl season ban is too harsh for a few young men trading memorabilia for tattoos and some change. The offending players and coach who covered it up are no longer part of the program. Please exercise your executive power to pardon the NCAA’s excessive sanctions placed on The Ohio State Buckeyes to enable a rightful, satisfying culmination to the college football season for the American people.”

That’s right, Mr. President. Do it. For America.

Now, clearly this had no chance of passing, but we salute (in the spirit of patriotism) those Ohio State fans so bold as to ask the Commander-in-Chief to stop everything else he’s doing to pardon their beloved Buckeyes. Like, hey, Mr. President. I know you’re busy with some wild stuff going on with Israel, but can you approve this real quick? Or, you know what? Here, I’ll just leave it on your desk right there. Okay. So, uh, yeah. You know, I’m just gonna… whatever, I’m not here. Go Buckeyes.

Asking the President to intervene for a football team on probation? Pathetic…

  2. BrownsTown says: Nov 20, 2012 5:23 PM

They should have asked before the election….you never know. While we’re at it, he should posthumously declare Oklahoma St as least season’s BCS Champ since Texas A&M exposed the SEC myth.

No votes to lose in the south.

Ohio fan there are consequences for actions. You broke the rules plane and simple. You went bowling last year when the vest tried covering up his cheating way. Take your punishment and crawl back in your hole in c-bus!

Wow what a garbage move. I bet the same fans who did this are the same ones who ask the Government for food stamps and free shelter too. What is wrong with this country. Oh yeah never mind. If they were smart they would have done what The U did and self impose there Bowl games but now look at them. I don’t like to laugh at ones misfortune but this one makes me LOL.

I have long given up on the BCS – it’s a farse. Ohio State, and really, at this point, any university, has a single goal, undefeated. The rest is just biased opinion until a true playoff format (not the one coming) is put in play.

What a surprise…..people in Ohio embarrassing themselves…..I only thought the women did that by walking outside….hideous…..HAIL HAIL MICHIGAN the leaders and best……buck the fuckeyes…

  9. kozbee says: Nov 20, 2012 5:48 PM

I believe its as dumb for what the team did for the ban as for the fans to get forgiveness for what the team did.Maybe the POTUS should add another season or two for them begging for bowl relief.Only in the BIG TEN.And please Mr. Obama while addressing their bowl bann try and wear the American Flag on your jacket..

  10. fruitcovejag says: Nov 20, 2012 5:51 PM

I sure hope this penalty is upheld. I’d hate to have to suffer through another hyped and then lopsided OSU bowl loss! And I’ve seen some bad games being a Jaguar fan…

I live in Ohio and I am a Buckeye fan. This is STUPID! Live with Buckeye fans, mistakes were made and punishment must be served. Maybe if the university had imposed hasher sanctions last year when everyone knew it was a lost season the NCAA wouldn’t have added anything additional. I’m embarrassed to be a fan right now!

Pathetic. Probably the same Ohio St people who trashed USC for their own sanctions. Congrats. You beat everyone in the mighty B1G. Biggest joke of a conference out there. Imagine if USC or Penn State or South Carolina or Miami asked for the president to pardon their bowl bans. I wonder how tOSU fans would react to that.

Join a real conference like PAC or SEC or Big12. What’s even more egregious is tha you’re petitioning to Obama. That guy is so incompetent, he just might do it because he’s more concerned with his sports popularity than running a country

  20. spartan822 says: Nov 20, 2012 6:20 PM

  26. rtfox says: Nov 20, 2012 7:10 PM

Hey brown eye, what myth would that be? That an sec school can lose? An sec team can only be beaten by another sec team? The only reason people hate the sec is because of all the nc games that they have won or been in the past years. If it was a different conference people would be doing the same thing to them. Everyone hates a winner, and will find some fault with them if it’s not the team or conference they love. Lots of non sec schools have had their shot, and haven’t been able to deliver.

  30. dcroz says: Nov 20, 2012 7:37 PM

    BrownsTown/PapaBush88:

Wow, those bitter tears just never stop flowing from you two, do they?

What “myth” did A&M expose? Yes, they played a helluva game in Tuscaloosa and won; they’ve also lost to the other two top-tier SEC teams they’ve faced–Florida and LSU–and at home, no less. As it is, they have two things in this, their first year in the SEC, that they did not have last year in their final Big XII-II season: a solid head coach in Kevin Sumlin, and a phenom of a QB in Johnny Manziel. Without them, the Ags would be struggling to get to six wins and a bowl this season; with them and still in the Big XII-II, and they would be 10-1 or 11-0 and right in the thick of chasing a conference title, a BCS bowl, and perhaps even the national title. They didn’t disprove any myth; rather, they just added to the fact that the SEC is the Marion’s best conference.

Oh, and for the assertion in the “petition” that OSU is on probation because a few players swapped their rings for tats: um, no. The Buckeyes are on probation because their head coach and administration LIED THROUGH THEIR TEETH about when they discovered the infractions so their guys would remain eligible for the Sugar Bowl that year. For a school that proclaims itself to be so damn good academically, its fans sure seems to have a hard time with history.

  39. mikeh3775 says: Nov 20, 2012 8:39 PM

I said last year OSU should copy Miami and self ban themselves. But no, they wanted to be greedy and get the cash before the NCAA punished them, and now they are suffering because of it.

If OSU fans want someone to blame, why not blame the University President, and Athletic Director, who had the chance to sit out last years bowl game, but didn’t.

  40. kingpel says: Nov 20, 2012 8:46 PM

Point #1 Notre Dame will lose this week.

Point #2 It would be fun to watch a SEC team blow out Ohio State.

Let them play! Let them play! Let them play!

  41. normtide says: Nov 20, 2012 9:35 PM

OSU fans are so funny. Your fourth in the AP, not second, so an AP title is doubtful. Grats on a great season, but the fact is, you traded this season for last years bowl, and the elusive win over the sec the year before. Remember all the players who promised to come back and accept suspensions the next year? Your obsession with the SEC cost you a shot at a title. You got what you paid for.

Exactly. Those whitehouse.gov petitions are there for some strange reason that escapes me – I guess just for folks to vent. All The White House says is that IF a petition gets 25,000 “signatures”, then there will be a “response”. In a lot of cases, it will probably be a carefully-worded version of “Go to h-e-doubletoothpicks.”

Sort of a shame that the TOSU petition was taken down. I can imagine petitions to allow FSU to secede from the ACC and for Uga IX to be awarded the Heisman Trophy.

Honestly can’t anyone besides a handful of those who have commented and seemingly have a grip on reality take this article in jest??? It’s articulated with humility and depicts nothing more than some serious fans wishing their team were included in the big picture, hindsight excluding. My god, you seriousy think this got ANY attention from the Prez?? Almost as pointless as me writing this soliloquy. This has nothing to do with the SEC and by all accounts on record didn’t that game against Ark not happen according to the NCAA?

  44. muffn says: Nov 20, 2012 10:20 PM

Mamabushleague, the only myth that got busted this year was the myth that USC had a ghost of a chance of winning a BCS title this year. Heck, hey couldn’t even win a Puke-12 divisional title with that flawed team. Go home to your mommy, little girl.

  48. uscatjerseyshore says: Nov 21, 2012 12:19 AM

First of all, @bozoforall you have an appropriate user name as you definitely are a bozo….. and no brain.

tOSU needs to suck it up. Multiple players taking gifts, selling items and a head coach who covered everything up. Then compare the USC sanctions to your sanctions and you should have a glimmer as to how easy your team got off.

  49. infrno says: Nov 21, 2012 12:27 AM

I second bozosforall. It’s funny to see a USC fan, whose team has won exactly 1 National Title in anything close to recent years (by cheating, no less – yes, your team cheated and actually got caught, you’re lucky Reggie’s Heisman was the only thing stripped) get on here because he’s butt-hurt that the SEC has DOMINATED college football for most of the past decade.

There is no “SEC myth”, but there damned sure is a USC myth.

Get ready for a 7th SEC National Champion in something like, what, 7 years?

  50. thraiderskin says: Nov 21, 2012 12:56 AM

    I’m so disappointed…

  51. uscatjerseyshore says: Nov 21, 2012 2:50 AM

Since USC has a 6-1 BCS record (only tOSU has as many wins) and was the National Champion 2X during the BCS era Alabama or Georgia would need to win 4 more to even catch the two teams with the most BCS wins. Not really sure who this SEC team is that you keep referring. The SEC is not a team. USC is a team. Alabama is a team. Georgia is a team. Ohio State is a team. Teams have records. Conferences don’t.

If you want to say USC cheated that’s your option. Knock yourself out. Works as well as playing lets pretend.

  52. jacksprat57 says: Nov 21, 2012 5:30 AM

Thank you for playing. You lost me when you began to scoff at the notion that POTUS would waste his precious time and energies on a trivial matter concerning a motley crew of rule breakers. After all, William Jefferson Clinton somehow found the time to pardon the fugitive Mark Rich. Just as did Haley Barbour, in a lesser capacity as Governor of Mississippi.

True, they both waited until the door was about to hit them on the backside, but Barrack Obama may well have sufficient arrogance to one-up Bill in this regard.

You conveniently forgot the fact that USC has a grand total of ZERO BCS titles! JUST so you know!
    ————————————-

I’m good on the facts. On the other hand you seem to have a problem in this area. Just so YOU know, USC was identified as the National Champion in 2004 and 2005. (2003 & 2004 seasons). I didn’t say USC held the BCS title even though that title WAS awarded to them in 2004. You may have bought into the idea that the BCS title is the only valid recognition but since the championship team is not determined by an NCAA championship or tournament event it is nothing more than a mythical national championship. A championship that is based on a highly flawed selection process I might add.

Be it as it may, USC remains recognized as the National Champion on the official NCAA website list of champions and we don’t have to play some version of “let’s pretend” to change that reality.

Since LSU has a 4-1 BCS record trailing only Florida in the group of SEC teams, not really sure what point you are attempting to make. It’s not a myth to say there are some really good teams that play in the SEC conference. USC’s run from 2003-2009 was impressive as any team from the SEC or any other conference. The idiotic, over-the-top sanctions were imposed, appealed and upheld. Whether you agree or not on the point of USC knowing about Reggie Bush receiving benefits, the levied severity of the sanctions was based on USC’s compliance. As an action that warrants a penalty that compliance or lack-thereof is miniscule compared to having the head coach covering up multiple and diverse activities and even though he was aware, having those players participate in post season play. tOSU got off lightly and rather than petitioning to play they really need to STFU.

  67. foreverlsu says: Nov 21, 2012 11:29 AM

Spare us the three paragraphs of excuses for USC. I said USC has zero BCS titles. Was I wrong? Absolutely not!

  68. normtide says: Nov 21, 2012 11:30 AM

All this bcs record talk leaves out one fact, the SEC has 6 teams with bcs bowl potential. All other leagues have 2 out maybe 3 teams, not counting the ones that back into it. The SEC had 5 teams with bcs titles, again most leagues have one. Just getting to a bcs bowl is a fight in the SEC.

  69. MasMacho says: Nov 21, 2012 11:44 AM

So let us all agree that Ohio State, LSU, USC are all excellent college football programs. Florida, Texas A&M, etc are fine programs. All of these teams (even in their present condition) would beat Notre Dame by 4 TD’s.

    … but I digress.

Let us focus instead on the astounding stupidity of those fans that would petition the leader of the free world to alleviate one’s need to have a satisfactory television bowl viewing experience in early January.

    ————————————-

USC was the BCS champion in 2004. That championship was later vacated by the NCAA as part of the sanctions. Since USC remains recognized as the BCS title holder on the NCAA website, USC still has the BCS title.

In any event, @infrno started flinging incorrect and inane comments completely off topic related to SEC superiority and USC’s record. My response was to point out there is no SEC team and respond to @infrno’s error which was “It’s funny to see a USC fan, whose team has won exactly 1 National Title in anything close to recent years” Since USC has won two (for you SEC guys who may find counting a challenge, that is the number after one). The on-topic remarks provided commentary on the relative lightness of the sanctions imposed on tOSU for which now they are asking for relief. That said, if tOSU want relief they might try an appeal to the NCAA COI.

Um, jerseyboy, I did no such thing. USC has won exactly 1 National Championship (the AP does not determine the recognized National Champion, sparky, that’s just an opinion poll without an actual championship game). They also had that 1 title vacated because they, um, GOT CAUGHT CHEATING.

As I said, the SEC has dominated college football for most of the last decade (6/10 = 60% > 50%, ergo “most”).

Talk about being challenged at math, you apparently don’t know WTH “most” means.

USC = the most overrated bunch of losers in NCAA history. I mean really, the only time you can actually win a championship, you have to resort to cheating.

    hahahahahaha

The Presidential Oversight Committee (POC) of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) today vacated participation by the University of Southern California (USC) in the 2005 Orange Bowl and the 2006 Rose Bowl, and also vacated USC’s BCS national championship for the 2004-05 season, following a May 26 announcement by the NCAA that it had denied USC’s appeal of sanctions imposed last year. As a result of the POCs decision, there will be no BCS national champion for the 2004-05 season.

“The BCS arrangement crowns a national champion, and the BCS games are showcase events for post-season football,” said BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock. “One of the best ways of ensuring that they remain so is for us to foster full compliance with NCAA rules. Accordingly, in keeping with the NCAA’s recent action, USC’s appearances are being vacated.

“This action reflects the scope of the BCS arrangement and is consistent with the NCAA’s approach when it subsequently discovers infractions by institutions whose teams have played in NCAA championship events.”

So, um, no. USC is not “recognized as the BCS title holder”.

Do you ever get tired of being wrong?

    Embarassing…

Oh well, everyteam has these kinds of fans….and if you think your team doesnt, then you are probably that fan..

Gene Smith should be walked out of the Woody Hayes with his belongings in a cardboard box.

I look forward to the crowds response this weekend when the Lying sweatervest walks out on to the field with the rest of the 2002 NC Team…

I don’t think Ohio State should have received sanctions at all and I am a borderline Ohio State fan. They sold some memorabilia (spelling?)? Really? Did they fight with their kid sister too? Did they not eat their peas? Give me a break. Ohio State’s sanctions proove to me that the NCAA department in charge of sanctions is a joke, allowing some things to pass, but not that.

On the other, hand: Ohio state fans? Show some friggin class. You got your hand slapped, take it like professional and stop making your team look bad, geeze. (I think I need a hug today or something, cause I’m a little grumpy and overly critical).

Hold on….I agree this petition is TOTALLY ridiculous, but spare me the hand slap nonsense.

We lose schollies, a bowl ban and got roasted by the national media because 1 man lied…about 5 guys who sold their own property..

It’s not like their Dads admitted to shopping them around……it’s not like they were given $300,000 by a booster…….It’s not like “somebody” sent a kid to his death in hurricane force winds………is it?

So in regard to being wrong which of the following statements is untrue.
    1. USC was recognized as the national champion in 2004 by the AP
    2. USC was the recognized as the national champion in 2005 by the AP & BCS.
    3. The BCS later (which means after) decided to vacate the 2005 title in May 2011
    4. The 2005 BCS National champion game was never played. USC did beat Oklahoma by the score of 55–19. They were never the 2004 BCS Champions nor were they identified by the AP as the AP National Champion.

Of course none of this has anything to do with the topic. But I give up…..

Papabush, the only thing that has exposed this year has been your Trojans.

Not even the best team in their city, much less their state, division, conference, country…

Still enjoying the Lane Kiffin Experience?

You would think with all the controversies that he’s involved in, that he wouldn’t be such a loser.

    Enjoy your continued mediocrity.

Good lord, jerseyshore, are you really this retarded? The AP doesn’t award the actual National Championship. USC did win the actual championship a year later, but…..drumroll…. they CHEATED and said game was vacated.

So no, your pathetic media darling team is nothing more than a bunch of losing cheaters.

Get it yet? Are you tired of being hopelessly wrong?

The AP standing has much (or as little) value as the BCS. You can believe what you want. The NCAA ( No Credibility At All) was just found for the second time as have malicious intent with regard to the findings against USC. You can continue your delusional belief that USC cheated or really didn’t win games that they won but anyone with a modicum of common sense or intelligence would have a different opinion.

    You must be kidding!

Dear Prez, Kindly put aside all that Mideast drama and please focus on what is really importnat here: OSU football.

You want to talk about really dumb moves that make your university look stupid! This is a classic.

    No Buckeyes.
