Report: Mike Riley to interview for Wisconsin vacancy

Bret Bielema shocked both his boss and most of the college football world by leaving Wisconsin for Arkansas earlier this month.

Apparently, the Badgers are trying to do the same in its search for a replacement.

According to CBSSports.com, and citing two sources with direct knowledge of the situation, UW athletic director Barry Alvarez will interview long-time Oregon State head coach Mike Riley in the not-too-distant future.  No other details were provided in the report, and OSU has yet to respond to a request for comment on the reported development.

If Riley were to leave the Beavers (see what I did there?), it would be no less stunning than Bielema’s departure.

Riley has spent 12 of the past 16 seasons in Corvallis as the Beavers’ head coach, leaving for a four-year stint (1999-2002) in the NFL.  His 81 wins are the most in school history.

Additionally, and during a coaching career that stretches back to 1975, Riley has never coached collegiately at any school that was east of the Rocky Mountains.

The out-of-the-blue Riley news comes on the same day that reports surfaced connecting Al Golden to UW.  After reportedly being offered the job, Golden ultimately opted to remain at Miami.

UPDATED 10:29 p.m. ET: The following is a tweet from Lindsay Schnell of the Oregonian.

“Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis says he has heard nothing about Riley interviewing for Wisconsin job.”

“Kind of funny report since it’s inaccurate,” tweeted Cliff Kirkpatrick of the Corvallis Gazette-Times said in regards to the initial report.

So, there’s that.

Screw it, nobody else wants the job, offer it to Favre.

Going for integrity guys unlike scum like Petrino.

Whatever the real scoop may be … that photo is perfect ;)

And if they hired Favre, I’d watch Badger games just for the off-chance of seeing him toss the ball around on the sidelines.

I would doubt that. National Signing day is approaching very fast. Players will have to decide or stay in early January. This is if course a huge impact on on recruiting.

Plus trying to hire assistants in mid/late January is going to mean you pretty much get the guys nobody else wanted.

And finally, I cannot see Peterson in Wisconsin, he has already turned down or declined to interview for many higher profile jobs.

Riley should wait until the USC job comes available next year. Class guy and very good coach with the lowly talent he gets.

I think it will be an up and coming assistant, or a retread like Houston Nutt or Ron Zook. UW is a tough job, aside from o-line, there is little in state recruiting. With the Urban renewal going on at OSU, I see the buckeyes cleaning up the b1g for a while, one again. From what I have read, the facilities are a little behind and they won’t pay assistants. It is going to be hard for W to land a high profile coach.

I’m kind of surprised that Tom Bradley’s name hasn’t come up in any of the coaching carousel conversations. Consistently lead/coached some outstanding defenses over the years in the Big 10.

And his name wasn’t mentioned in the Freeh report, and that dude (Freeh) swung at everyone.

    Hey normtide,

Stop spreading false information. UW Madison has some of the finest state-of-the-art facilities in the country. “From what I’ve heard…” From what you’ve heard where? You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Admitting that would at least be intellectually honest.

  11. normtide says: Dec 14, 2012 11:51 AM

That is what I read, sorry it upsets you so much. The facilities are good, not great. From the way you got upset, sounds like you have heard it before.

There was an article in june or july ranking B1G facilities. 1 being best and 12 being worst UW squeaked in right in front of Northwestern at #11. seems to be what I have heard as well.

Wisconsin is building an athletic performance center that could be a game-changer.

Wisconsin’s $76.8 million Athletic Performance Center, approved as part of the state’s 2011-’13 biennial budget, has a new design and slightly different location since the project was first made public last year.Groundbreaking is still set to take place in December or January, and the project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2014.

  15. hatesycophants says: Dec 14, 2012 4:45 PM

Lasalle is an actual institution of higher learning. No way normtide got beyond the 8th grade. Well done, hillfolk!

  16. dolphins4 says: Dec 14, 2012 7:31 PM

They should try to hire Mike Holmgren.
