Irish could get third-leading receiver back for BCS championship

Pittsburgh v Notre Dame Getty Images

Notre Dame keeps getting the luck of the Irish.*

(*Laziest, corniest lede everrrrrrrrrrr)

Coach Brian Kelly announced Monday that two of the Irish’s better interior lineman — offensive lineman Zack Martin and nose tackle Louis Nix — would be returning for their senior season. During that press conference, Kelly also said that wide receiver DaVaris Daniels is on pace to make a possible comeback in the BCS championship game against Alabama.

Daniels sustained a broken clavicle during a win over Boston College last month and was expected to miss the rest of the season. There was hope, however, that Daniels could make it back in time for the postseason. Kelly confirmed that optimism, adding that Daniels is transitioning from non-contact drills to full contact.

He looks really good,” Kelly said. “He’s going to be able to be a key contributor for us.”

Although Daniels does not have a touchdown reception on the year, he is the team’s third-leading receiver with 25 receptions for 375 yards.

I hope Alabama beats ND in the NC game so the SEC can win its 7th in a row. I pray that players on either side exit the game in good health, no major injuries. Both teams are deserving to play in this game. That is all.

No one in any other conference cares at all for other members of their conference like the SEC. Do you think the Tarheels cheer for Duke when the Blue Devils play in the national championship game? No chance. The Heels would pull for the Red Chinese National Team before they would cheer for Duke. Only in the inbred SEC does this happen. Maybe the “cousins thing” is true. Go Irish. Shut these SEC cousins up once and for all.

Call the SEC fans whatever names you choose but don’t forget to end the name calling with
They prove it where it matters most “ON THE FIELD!!!”

@tampabayirish – not all of us SEC folks are like that. It would take an act of Congress to make me pull for Alabama.

  5. rolltide510 says: Dec 18, 2012 10:39 AM

For the record, the bottom half of the SEC cheers for the top half. Fans of the teams that matter could care less what the other conference teams do.

Good to hear he is coming back strong.

    Alabama’s secondary is SHORT,SMALL !

Eifert and Goodman can use thier height on them, I think Tj and Toma do work underneath, so Daniels actually could be a big factor, you never know….brown, heck even neal?

ND’s passing game has grown with Golson’s accuracy and knowing where to go with the ball…..

It’s not predicated on a big time WR, its like a silent killer ontaining first downs and settin gup a big play downfield, Alabama has short safeties, non can guard Eifert one on one. NONE.

its chess it aint checkers !!!!!!!!

HAHAHAH true, if your referring to “thegamecocker” i agree.

He’s also secretly mad about Everett Golson going to ND over South Car….

I will never forget going to a BCS game in N.O. and seeing LSU and Gerogia fans jumping up and down together chanting “S-E-C” !!!

    Its strange.

    @808scalem….& @ 808raider….

Last year: ‘Bama NC in football; Kentucky NC in BBall and SC in College World Series Finals for third year in a row. Call us whatever you care to as long as its WINNERS! Yes, our schools cheer for one another because that is the way we act when playing someone out of the conference. I honestly never heard of Everett Golson before he showed up at ND. He is a fine QB and it will be interesting to see how he performs in the NC game. I am not blatantly upset that he is at ND nor am I secretly upset. I hope it is a good game and that Alabama wins. You see “rum nuts”, when any of our SEC schools are in a NC game, it is a financial boon to all members. So we all get to laugh all the way to the bank. And when we win, it is even better. Now go away….

  11. pudgalvin says: Dec 18, 2012 3:56 PM

@gamecocker: You had never heard of Everett Golson!!!! I figured Brian Kelly would have called you and asked you what you thought about him before actually recruiting him. Or did all the SEC coaches just call you and see if he was worth going after? I mean, if you hadn’t heard of one of the high school quarterbacks out of the 20,000 or so each year, I can’t imagine him being any good.

  12. 808raiderinparadise says: Dec 18, 2012 4:32 PM

So “gamecocker” your such a huge fan?

maybe you would know or follow your incoming recruiting class and would have known how bad spurrier wanted Golson?

FYI he played HS football in myrtle beach, SC … heard of it?

He also threw for the 6th most passing TD in HS football history, in america. ever.

He is also know playing in the BCS championship, something south carolina isn’t even close to.

But I get it, you cheer for the SEC, so alabama is now your team, and florida and A&M and…

More “other” college football fans still can’t get their head wrapped around the fact that SOME SEC schools cheer for other SEC schools in the championship game. I’m a UGA fan, and I do hope Alabama wins, not because I’m some make shift Alabama fan all of a sudden,( no t-shirt, jersey, nor banner, flag, etc) I’d rather see Alabama win the ND. When UF played OU, I wasn’t running around buying UF clothes and yelling GO Gators, but I did hope the win. Doesn’t mean I would’ve felt bad if they lost, I had my pick between UF and OU. I went with the team I knew more about and had more familiarity with. I GUARNTEE if ND beats Alabama, more non-ND fans on here would be smack talking about the SEC, then hardnosed ND fans. If hoping an SEC team wins over a non SEC team makes me a SEC (insert name), what do you call Non SEC fans who wish? I could call them (insert name) just as equally. It is what it is, don’t like it. Tough, have a coke and a smile and watch football

Didn’t know Saban can put up points as well?
I would like to see him can more than negative 47 rushing yards on the ND D.

Being that Alabama rushed for 350 on Georgia and barely won… Gerogia not even top 50 against the run in the country.

ND top 5 in every category.

Keep calling ND out of this game ….

Im sure all you SEC fans will vanish after ND wins.

Your rapier like wit is amusing. Since I don’t follow high school kids like you, excuse me for not knowing about the outstanding prospects. I do know the Head Ball Coach recruited two very good QB’s although I don’t know there names….but I’m sure you do because you’re the recruiting maven. You’re a real rocket man! I bet you know everything about every 5 Star Rival, Scout, or 24/7 recruit. You are just a special guy! Ya know what, ” puddin”, go eat a cookie and smile. ROLL TIDE!!!!

There have been 5 double digit pt spreads in nc since 98. Unless y’all fancy yourselves as the 02 tosu team, 4 were blown out. & we all know how that team of cheaters won on a blown pi call.

There are big casinos in Vegas for a reason.

  20. irishdodger says: Dec 18, 2012 11:40 PM

U do realize Vegas doesn’t pick winner or losers nor do they set the spread based on who they think will win? They make their money of the Vig so all they want is equal amounts of cash on both sides.

To use a Vegas analogy, ND is playing w/ house money. 2013 was supposed to be the year they turned the corner. They got there one year early & since no one is giving them a chance…they have nothing to lose.

I just feel sad for all the lower tier SEC fans whose lives will be meaningless when an SEC team (not their’s of course) doesn’t win the NC. Talk about red-headed step children…the majority of that conference serve as nothing more than Bama’s b$!?h.

  22. gatornjax says: Dec 19, 2012 6:45 AM

Well first of all, the reason you northern folk don’t understand the sec chant is simply because you guys don’t know what’s it like to get tested every week in your inferior conferences, or no conference at all (Notre dame). Just ask A&M or mizzou fans, I GUARANTEE that aggie fans will be beating their SEC chests after they beat OU bc they know what it’s all about now and so does mizzou. Unfortunately for mizzou they didn’t have the luxury of having johnny football at the helm to lead their sorry team to a bowl.

The second reason we chant is because of the media fap fest that took place with overrated teams like Notre Dame, ohio state, and Usc for years while teams like an undefeated auburn in 2004 had to watch the championship at home and were serenaded in all the BS.

The third reason and probably the main one has nothing to do with football. Is has everything to do with the supiriority complex that the rest of the nation has against the south in general. You brain dead Yankees and limp wristed west coasters act like everything about your pethetic liberal supporting lives are far greater than anything the “hillbillies” in the south would ever know about. Well, let me tell ya, ya suck at football and a mojority of you suck as human beings, but most of you are too ignorant to realize it.

In conclusion, that is why us “inbred mouth breathers” chant for the SEC. If anybody tells you any different, they’re full of crap. If you don’t like the chant, then shut it up. I seriously doubt you can.

  23. thegamecocker says: Dec 19, 2012 10:05 AM

I see your mother taught you well. But I am happy SEC folks are getting under your skin and making your blood pressure surge. ROLL DAM TIDE!

Yeah, we “bottom feeders” laugh all the way to the bank. But you domers already know about that since you have so much money in the endowment. But when the ACC ends up with: Duke, Wake, UVa, James Madison, East Carolina, Furman, Miama, I will
LMAO! Please, just go away already.

  25. rebelnutt says: Dec 19, 2012 1:03 PM

I keep hearing all of the talk about laughing all the way to the bank…..when did you receive a check from the SEC? Sorry folks, none of you or I get paid for this. Don’t forget you have the SEC…ND has their own conference…don’t share with anybody in football. Every team in the nation wishes they could do that, except for the conference white hats. They need you to pull for the “SEC” when in fact it means nothing to anyone except for the ones who get their pockets lined. That sure isn’t any of us…..

  26. rebelnutt says: Dec 19, 2012 1:22 PM

To the southern pride person….you forgot southern charm! Swallow your southern pride for a moment and try to let go of the fact that ( “your” gators…can I say “your” gators? Or is it the “SEC’s” gators???) couldn’t make the game that “counts”. Cause let’s face it…ya sucked in the georgia game.

  27. thegamecocker says: Dec 19, 2012 1:30 PM

It’s not about me….it is about the money my university receives from the SEC. Can’t tell which side you’re on: are you an obnoxious ND fan…or are you just STUPID? Your call…but a loser either way. Gotta get back to work…and you have to get back to the unemployment line. See ya….

  28. 808raiderinparadise says: Dec 19, 2012 4:32 PM

    FOR WHAT its worth …

ND was 10 point underdogs @ Oklahoma.

    How’d that work out?

Vegas has been haunted (as of ND fans too) of hwo ND has shown up the last 10 years in big games.

    Nevermore. Nevermore. Nevermore.

ND has talent, great coaching and the right recruits for the system in place.

Not to mention a D-line as deep as it is talented.

  29. gatornjax says: Dec 19, 2012 4:39 PM

@rebelnutt yeah I would say we’ve sucked most of the season but still managed an eleven win season. We fared a little bit better than your rebels who sucked against Texas, bama, A&M, georgia ( y’all lost by like twenty points) Lsu, and lets not forget the powerhouse VANDY. I wouldn’t expect you to understand the chant either since you guys don’t have much experience with it or any at all. No they’re not the “sec” gators or any of tht bafoonery, I just understand that the SEC plays better football than anyone in the country even with your bottom feeding rebels riding coat tails with the bcs bowl money we get every year. I mean when weas the last time you guys were relevant? The sixties? You really shouldn’t be bitter towards the whole SEC brotherhood thing, I mean if you have a halfway decent season your Rebs may crack the top twenty five ONLY bc they are in the best conference in the nation. This would never take place anywhere else

  30. thegamecocker says: Dec 19, 2012 4:47 PM

Is rebelnutt nuts or what? I couldn’t tell if he was an SEC supporter or a ND sycophant. Your post is absolutely correct. I think Hugh Freese is doing some nice things there if in fact he is an Ole Miss fan. He needs to be taught to not “bite the hand that feeds him”…and that would be the SEC. BTW, good luck in your bowl game! The Head Ball Coach always says if Carolina doesn’t win, he hopes the Gators do!
    South Carolina fans agree.

  31. gatornjax says: Dec 19, 2012 5:08 PM

@thegamecocker yeah I really don’t understand the logic of him. I mean they’re already irrelevant and acts like his conference doesn’t keep them in the talk. But I couldn’t agree more with the hire they made In freeze. Seems to care a lot more than the previous loony toon they had which this guy seems to support. Hints the name “nutt.” But spurier will always be loved by gator fans regardless of what he does at SC. You guys will be next the next great SEC powerhouse if things continue the way the are. Thank you hopefully the good florida gators show up to play that day. Beat the brakes off of Michigan please to send them off with two SEC beat downs in one year!

  32. rebelnutt says: Dec 19, 2012 5:51 PM

Wow! That about sums it up. Not sure if either of you are educated or home schooled, but to the point “your” school could care less about you. Just keep sending them their money and one day you will wake up and find out what I mean, or maybe that fine education you have won’t allow you.

  33. gatornjax says: Dec 19, 2012 8:14 PM

Wow now I know your a Notre dame homer. Your comments are very vague and rather rediculous. I will have a bs in biology at the end of the spring semester and am currently applying for various PT schools. I don’t know what your getting at slamming me for my education other than your just another ignorant Yankee that doesn’t have enough sense to formulate a decent post. Your making my case for the superiority complex thing. And the reason my conference is better than the rest is bc of fans like us. We care more, it’s part of our heritage. I mean if people in towns like Tuscaloosa, or Gainesville experience losing seasons couches burn and coaches get fired while in other places yeah it sucks but it’s not horrible. So I would say that the fans do dictate a small part of a teams success and the schools definitely care about us bc they care about winning. Notre dame is over rated year after year and it’s sickening. Yeah I get that the hype that the SEC gets is rediculous but it’s earned. You losers get ESPN specials and tons of national exposure bc of garbage y’all did thirty years ago so it’s a thousand times worse.

  34. irishdodger says: Dec 19, 2012 9:02 PM

I’m a Southerner who is an Irish fan, yet I don’t go to all the SEC articles to post passive aggressive rants to hide my own insecurity like u folks. You folks are obsessed w/ a team that you’ve not watched play an entire game.

The irony is you use Southern pride vs evil Yankees. First off, I make Attila the Hun look like a Liberal…so don’t go there Che. Secondly, you do realize that the best teams in the SEC have been coached by Yankees. Saban @ Bama, Meyer @ UF before he left, Miles @ LSU, Richt @ UGA. Based on your logic, those coaches y’all worship would qualify as carpetbaggers…right?

I at least respect Bama/Auburn fans and Ole Miss/MSU fans. If their hated rival played in the NC, they’d root for the the opponent regardless of the opponent. You do realize Bama & other BCS teams from the SEC get paid regardless of winning the bowl?

Now to your alleged strength of schedule. Dude, you’re in a 14 team conference and u only play 8 conference games? I’d respect the SEC & other BcS powers if they’d quit playing FCS schools…that’s inexcusable. Y’all love to point out NDs triple OT win over a 6-6 Pitt. At least they’re in a BCS conference & playing in a bowl. Florida needed a miracle to survive LA-Laf of the mighty SunBelt. The Gators even struggled w/ Jacksonville St of the FCS for a half (10-0). They’re not exactly the Steel Curtain when it comes to D…but y’all could only manage 23? A win is a win, but u might want look at your own schedule before bashing a team who has NEVER played an FCS school. ND beat ten bowl eligible teams & they were all FBS schools that were in a BCS conference or Independent.

See, not every team is going to be up every year. While NDs schedule looked impossible in the preseason, SC, MSU & Mich were not as good as thought. That’s not NDs fault. But it is the SECs fault when they schedule Sun Belt schools & FCS teams like Wofford, Jax St, Towson, Western Carolina & Georgia Southern. And don’t cry about playing a conf championship game. No one put a gun to your head…it’s nothing more than a money grab. Had your Gators not choked vs Bama in 1992, it would have blown up in your face. BTW, when is the last time UF left the state of Florida for a non-conference game? I’m guessing early 90s?

  35. rebelnutt says: Dec 19, 2012 9:05 PM

Your Degree is in BS??? I’ll buy that…

  36. gatornjax says: Dec 20, 2012 12:24 AM

Yeah we’ll why don’t these Yankee coaches stay at their Yankee schools? Well ill tell you why, because they know that the sec pays the best and plays the best. The reason urban is at Ohio state is bc of health problems aka he couldn’t handle the SEC anymore. I appreciate urban for what he did for our program but the way he left was pethetic. Now he’s in a much less stressful environment where people just don’t care as much. But anyways for the record if the leg humpers (ga) played in a natty I would buy a Tshirt for the other team and cheer them on mainly bc georgia fans have about the same amount of delusion as you guys.

I also never said anything about only getting money from bowls when you win? But you have to get to a bowl to get paid in the first place am I right? And terrific job of pointing out who we didn’t play hoss. We played five top ten teams who were then ranked in the top ten while four of them still are and the fifth is ranked twelfth. Are you kidding me man?? Why in the heck would we schedule anyone else other than fcs opponents and make it virtually impossible to make it to a decent bowl? And nobody is “holding a gun to your head” and making you play all bcs schools. Your Notre dame, the most over hyped program in the history of the world, if you go unbeaten then you go to a natty.

And as far as our steel curtain defense we were ranked fifth in total defense for the year, one spot ahead of your holy Irish defense that only played two top ten teams. So how come your bashing our schedule? SEC teams do this to take a break from killing each other every week. Yeah it’s easier to take on an SEC for just one game playing a whole slate of them is different. Look at mizzou, played georgia well for three quarters and then went on to get beat by Vanderbilt later on in the year because of the beat downs that they sustained earlier on. A&M had a heisman winner and studs all over the field and still only managed to be fourth in the sec. Your sound ignorant with your schedule rants when florida is easily in the top five of schedule strengths In multiple polls.
Your probably one of those misplaced Yankees that I have to live amongst down here in florida bc they can’t stand where they’re from so they move to where it’s nicer. Your about as intelligent as one.

  37. gatornjax says: Dec 20, 2012 12:31 AM

  38. goirishnashville says: Dec 20, 2012 12:57 AM

If ND, Bama, Oregon and K-State all went undefeated, ND would have been ranked 4th out of the 4 even though the computers said that ND had the toughest schedule. Isn’t that like anti-bias towards ND?

  39. bflosportsfan1968 says: Dec 20, 2012 1:58 AM

I have been an Irish Fan since the early 80’s and I am enjoying the attention the #1 ranked team in the Nation has received in the last five weeks since the Irish got the top spot for the National Title game.

In some respects the SEC deserve the accolades that have come their way in the last seven years. Having said that I fear Crimson Tide players and their fans might be overly optimistic about their teams chances against Notre Dame. We all know how well ND and Alabama have done in the Regular Season and

I believe that this game will be much closer than the so-called experts think it will be.
I am not saying that the #1 team in the Nation can’t be upset, but in my opinion there will be more pressure on the Tide to win to prove that the team deserves to be playing in the laszt game of the season.

We’ll hall have the answer in the early morning hours of January 8th.

I agree I think this game will be a lot closer than a lot of people think. I don’t think teams can “luck” their way into a national championship you have to be good. Even though I think bama will win I think notre dame will take them to the wire.

  42. thegamecocker says: Dec 20, 2012 8:50 AM

Good post and I agree with your assessment. Pressure will be on the Tide to demonstrate superiority. But they have played in more big games over the past 5 years than ND and I think this will be yet another advantage for ‘Bama. I think a 9 1/2 point line for The Tide is way too many points and ND will use that to their advantage as bulletin board hype. Brian Kelly has accumulated good talent that have adapted to the system sooner than expected. Like I said in my first post: I hope The Tide win; I hope the game is played injury free; and both teams are deserving. Now the rude and obnoxious ND fans can hit the thumbs down button and post some disgusting response. That is how some of them roll. But ROLL TIDE!!!

The gamecocker is everywhere lol…this should be highly contested game and played great on both sides of the ball by both teams…notre dame will not only hang but it should be a back and forth game but again with the irish not playing in any big games thats the one thing about playing for notre dame and being undefeated, every game becomes a big one and a must win…GO IRISH!!!
