Ex-ECU DC officially lands at WVU

Reported to be the case for a while, former East Carolina defensive coordinator Brian Mitchell has officially joined West Virginia’s coaching staff as the team’s cornerbacks coach.

WVU made the announcement Tuesday morning, about two weeks after Mitchell was let go at ECU.

“Brian is an excellent addition to the West Virginia football staff and has a wealth of experience as a cornerbacks coach,” Dana Holgorsen (pictured) said. “He brings a lot of energy, is an aggressive recruiter, and I have seen him develop young players into great players. He is an outstanding coach and even better person, and I look forward to him joining our program.”

Mitchell’s addition is the latest in a series of shakeups on the Mountaineers’ staff. Keith Patterson was promoted to defensive coordinator while former DC Joe DeForest will reportedly take over special teams, a spot previously held by longtime assistant Steve Dunlap. Dunlap was one of two assistants, along with cornerbacks coach Daron Roberts, to be let go after the season. Arizona’s safeties coach. Tony Gibson. is will join the staff as well.

Quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital is moving on to Texas A&M to serve as QB coach and co-offensive coordinator under Kevin Sumlin, and its expected WVU OC Shannon Dawson will move his position responsibilities to that spot to make room for Lonnie Galloway, a former Mountaineers receivers coach under Bill Stewart.
