As expected, Washington’s star tight end won’t be around the football program for the foreseeable future as he navigates his way through the legal system.
Following practice Tuesday, head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed that Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been indefinitely suspended from all team activities following an incident over the weekend. Seferian-Jenkins was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a one-car accident Saturday night.
He has not, however, been officially charged.
The player’s status, Sarkisian said, would be evaluated upon the completion of the investigation, which could carry past UW’s spring game April 20. Sarkisian did not address whether Seferian-Jenkins will miss any games as a result of the incident. The Huskies open the season at home against Boise State.
“I think we would all say it’s disappointing. We miss him,” Sarkisian said. “We’ll support him. Austin’s a good kid. He made some mistakes, but we’ll continue to support him.”
Sarkisian added that Seferian-Jenkins was not injured in the accident and his absence is “sheerly a suspension that’s based on our student-athlete handbook.” Seferian-Jenkins was transported to a local hospital via ambulance with injuries consistent with hitting his face on the windshield.
In a statement released Monday night, Seferian-Jenkins apologized and said he takes “full responsibility for my actions.”
