Season-ending surgery in the offing for Gator RB Matt Jones

And the hits just keep on coming for the SEC East.

Florida announced Monday that running back Matt Jones suffered a torn meniscus and will undergo surgery in short order to repair the damage. The surgery, head coach Will Muschamp said, will end Jones’ 2013 season.

“Very unfortunate, I hate it for Matt,” Muschamp said. “To go through what he went through... to have this setback is disheartening.”

What Muschamp is referring to is the fact that Jones had come back from a viral infection that cost him summer camp and sidelined him for the season opener against Toledo. Despite that, the sophomore’s 339 yards rushing is second only to Mack Brown‘s 340 this season.

Jones rushed for a season- and career-high 176 yards in the Sept. 28 win over Kentucky.
