Jimbo Fisher puts pen to paper on new FSU contract

It appears Texas can cross one significant name off its coaching to-do list.

Florida State announced Tuesday afternoon that, as expected, Jimbo Fisher has signed a new contract that will include a raise and extension. Fisher is now under contract with FSU through at least the 2019 season.

It had been reported nearly four weeks ago that Fisher and the university had agreed to the terms of a new deal.

“We are extremely pleased with the direction of our program and believe that this new contract will assure that Coach Fisher is in place to lead the Seminoles for a long time to come,” athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a statement. “Coach Fisher enjoys the full support of the leadership of the university and we look forward to the continued success of our football program on the field and in the classroom.”

Contractual details, including buyout figures, are expected to be released later this week. It’s believed Fisher’s new deal would bump him from $2.7 million to just over $4 million annually, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.

The announcement comes six days prior to the Seminoles’ BCS title game matchup with Auburn. It also comes amidst rumors that Fisher is at or near the top of UT’s candidates to replace Mack Brown.
