Well that was certainly quick... and tells you all you need to know about Al Golden and his offensive coaching staff’s confidence in the current state of the quarterback position. And that Golden wasn’t BSing when leaving the transfer door open.
In a press release, Miami (Fla.) announced that Jake Heaps has signed a financial aid agreement and will transfer into the Hurricanes football program. Just this past Friday, Kansas officially -- and finally -- confirmed that the quarterback was transferring from the Jayhawks.
Because Heaps will be a graduate transfer, he will be eligible to play immediately in 2014. And, not only that, but Heaps will have the opportunity to start immediately.
In April, Ryan Williams, the heir apparent to Stephen Morris, suffered a torn ACL and is not expected to play in 2014. With Williams out, the starting job was expected to fall to Kevin Olsen; with the addition of Heaps and his experience and his recruiting pedigree, there will be a quarterback competition come early August in South Florida.
In December of 2011, it was reported that Heaps would be transferring from BYU to Kansas. After sitting out the 2012 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, Heaps started nine games for the Jayhawks in 2013. During that lone season on the field in Lawrence, Heaps completed just 49 percent of his passes and tossed 10 interceptions versus eight touchdowns.
Reports that Heaps would be leaving Lawrence came two weeks after Montell Cozart was tabbed by head coach Charlie Weis as the Jayhawks’ starter.
Heaps was a four-star member of the Cougars’ 2010 recruiting class and the No. 1 pro-style QB in the country according to Rivals.com.
