Dismissed Texas Tech player could face felony charges

Being dismissed from Texas Tech was only the start for former cornerback Nigel Bethel II. Accused of punching a Texas Tech women’s basketball player in the face, Bethel now faces felony assault charges, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Over the weekend Texas Tech dismissed Bethel, a promising young cornerback, following reports of an incident involving he and Amber Battle. According to reports, Bethel punched Battle in the face during a basketball game at the school’s recreation center. Texas Tech confirmed police on campus were investigating the details of the incident.

That investigation yielded a one-page report stating the attack involved “hands, fists, feet, etc.” The police report accuses Bethel of “causing serious bodily injury.” Battle reportedly needed surgery following the attack. Bethel was released from custody with charges from the Lubbock County district attorney’s office pending.
