SDSU LB Jake Fely granted sixth year

San Diego State already knew they’d have linebacker Jake Fely for the 2014 season. Now they know they’ll have the defensive leader around for a little longer than that as well.

In a press release, the Aztecs announced that Fely has been granted a sixth-year waiver request by the NCAA. Fely had already been granted a medical redshirt for the 2010 season after he suffered a lacerated liver that cost him all but the first three games of that year.

In the fourth game of the 2013 season, Fely suffered a broken foot that cost him the remainder of that year. When healthy, however, he’s one of the Aztecs’ standout defenders.

In between the injuries, Fely had started 30 straight games for the Mountain West school. In 2012, the school wrote, “Fely became the only Rocky Long coached player in the last 14 seasons to record at least two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, 10 tackles for loss and 90 tackles in a single season.” In his only other healthy season, Fely had 58 tackles (30 solo), 5.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks and three forced fumbles as a sophomore in 2011.
