Hokies lose OL for 2014 but RB Edmunds is back and running

Trey Edmunds

The first days of camp in the ACC have not been very kind to senior linemen. On the same day Wake Forest announced the loss of senior defensive tackle Johnny Garcia for the 2014 season, Virginia Tech also had a bit of unfortunate news to share. Senior offensive lineman Brent Benedict will be forced to miss the 2014 season due to an unspecified medical condition. It was reported in late May Benedict had suffered an ankle injury in spring practices. The injury led to the formation of blood clots in the leg.

“Brent Benedict has been a great teammate at Virginia Tech, and we will miss his toughness,” Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer said in a statement released by the school. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors, and he will always be a Hokie.”

According to the Virginia Tech statement, Benedict will continue to be apart of the football program in a non-playing capacity.

There was some good news out of Blacksburg though. Running back Trey Edmunds has been cleared to participate with no restrictions in fall camp. Edmunds suffered a broken leg n the Virginia game at the end of the 2013 season. He is still doing some work to get back to full strength so he may take some drills and reps lightly this summer, but this is good news for the Hokies. Edmunds led Virginia Tech in rushing with 75 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.
