USC RB Anthony Brown ‘couldn’t play for a racist,’ quits team

Syracuse v USC Getty Images

This has not been a very good last 7-10 days for the USC football program.

Late last week athletic director Pat Haden was hospitalized twice for undisclosed medical reasons.  Then, senior captain Josh Shaw turned from hero to fabricator in less than 48 hours, with his future on the team in limbo.  Now?  Some ugly and startling accusations are hurtling out of the Land of Troy.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed to the local writers covering the team that Anthony Brown has decided to quit the football team.  Prior to that, the senior running back — he had recently been moved from cornerback in a switch he requested — went on Instagram and, well, went here:

Instagram Racist

That social media post appeared to be the impetus for Sarkisian’s announcement.  From Scout.com:

Sark said he was “shocked” at these allegations, called them “ridiculous” and welcomed us to talk to anyone in or around the program and they would tell us that it simply wasn’t true.

Sark said they tried to accommodate Brown, moving him to running back. He was unfortunately hurt but Sark said they still tried to get him to stay on the team. Sark felt he could help the team. Brown refused, quit the team then posted the following on Facebook:

“Couldn’t play for a racist man!!!!!!!!!!!
#FightOn”

Sarkisian is getting set to enter his first season as USC’s head coach and hasn’t even coached a game, yet he’s already seen two messy situations that need cleaning.

Already, though, his players are jumping to their head coach’s defense via Twitter.

USC got a lot better this week in terms of character

  2. jec332 says: Aug 28, 2014 2:55 PM

Yeah, but was he a racist while saving his drowning nephew?

  3. phillyphanatic77 says: Aug 28, 2014 2:55 PM

I’m not foolish enough to say that racism doesn’t still exist in many forms, but I think this is absurd. Sounds more like a kid not getting the playing time he thought he deserved so he quickly jumps to the race card. It’s not like Sarkisian has a history of playing white kids over black kids. Brown needs to grow up.

    Fisrt..
i love the way we say Liars now when referring to athletes ..’fabricator”
Second.. playing the race card because you don’t perform to standards
USC has been going downhill hill since they hired lame kitten

  5. tigersfandan says: Aug 28, 2014 3:03 PM

It’s more likely that Anthony Brown is the racist.

  6. mydixienormus says: Aug 28, 2014 3:07 PM

Chalk this up among the many adjectives used to describe Sark:
    - Liar
    - Lip Licker
    - Fat Ass
    - D-Bag
    - Etc.

  7. jagsfan2012 says: Aug 28, 2014 3:27 PM

Sark treated him like a slave? So he was forced to work the field, was whipped, deprived of food? I don’t understand.

  8. fearthehoody says: Aug 28, 2014 3:36 PM

That’s what happens when you play for USCheat

  9. bucrightoff says: Aug 28, 2014 3:45 PM

Sounds like he might have gotten away with this crap with old Lane running the show, but not Sark says not so much. Good sign if you’re a USC fan.

  10. sdelmonte says: Aug 28, 2014 3:48 PM

Things not to do today: place a bet on USC winning the title. Or very much else.

  11. swampcannons says: Aug 28, 2014 3:51 PM

    @mydixienormus(aka hunglikeafruitfly):

Why would you even care? According to you, and you’re the only dolt I’ve heard this from, Chris Petersen is the #1 coach in cfb and any team would just snatch him up right this minute. I’ll bet though that when Sark was @ UW he was the second coming of Christ and you kissed the ground he walked on. Looking forward to all of your idiotic offseason predictions falling flat you football halfwit.

Now to the article. As if it isn’t clear already, social media is a curse. When emotions run high and a player isn’t getting the PT he feels he deserves, take it up face to face and man to man with the coach. During these times, private thoughts should remain exactly that, private. Damned sure he will regret this as I don’t see another coach out there that would want to welcome in this cowardly attitude.

    Race card played. Again.

  13. cometkazie says: Aug 28, 2014 4:06 PM

Is this a sign that normalcy has returned at U$C?

Or they are just culling the herd?

  14. scbaby2013 says: Aug 28, 2014 4:09 PM

Fight on Trojans!!! Can’t wait until other programs have probs, oh wait Miami, Ohio st, Florida state, and nd to name a few don’t have perfect programs either.

  16. paulwt3 says: Aug 28, 2014 4:18 PM

I believe him. Big-time NCAA football and the NFL are eerily like slave times. You have a bunch of old white men bossing around and measuring and checking the physical size, strength, musculature, attitude, work ethic of a bunch of strong young black men. It’s creepy as fuck and is basically slave era stuff, just with the blacks having gotten ‘free education’ (but not really – these degrees are worthless, as they get them) or ‘big NFL money’ out of it.

Please tell me this is sarcasm. Otherwise this is the stupidest thing I’ve read in a long time. Yeah it’s exactly like slavery, except for the whole making millions of dollars thing. Degrees are worthless? Not if you actually go to class and learn something.

    Full ride scholarship.
    Training table meals.
    Housing stipend.
    Pell Grant money.
NFL scouts all over this pro factory.
College girls, (in freakin’ L.A.!), dying to date you.
Get to play football at USC.

ACTUALLY HAVE A CHOICE TO NOT DO THIS IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, UNLIKE SLAVERY.

This guy is a piece of work……..

  19. michiganhockey11 says: Aug 28, 2014 4:43 PM

    Heard a guy once say-

“slavery never went away, it just got more expensive”.

As appaling as slavery was, there is some truth to that statement, slightly.

  20. longborer69 says: Aug 28, 2014 5:06 PM

I absolutely despise USC. But I never, ever heard anything to indicate Sark was a racist.

Somehow, if he was, I think something would have somehow leaked out before now. It’s not like he’s new to coaching teams with a lot of black guys, etc. Someone would have come out with it, at least after they left.

As much as I hate USC (and Washingten, soon to be Washingeleven, for that matter), and thus dislike Sark, no one, not even him, should be called a racist without some solid evidence.

  21. pgilbert15303 says: Aug 28, 2014 5:24 PM

Oh oh… There goes the scholarship.

    Welcome to the real world.

  22. croye says: Aug 28, 2014 5:27 PM

I’m just thinkin’: could Brown have been any MORE vague? Accuse a guy of a career-ending personal issue and then…………….gone! Way to go young man, learn early to just lurk around, yap in the background and never be approachable or accountable. Makes us all proud a ya’.

  23. rite99 says: Aug 28, 2014 5:32 PM

Couldn’t have his way, so now it’s the race card as usual, better off without the trouble makeer.

  24. tbrown17 says: Aug 28, 2014 5:43 PM

Is this what they call playing the race card?

  25. chargrz says: Aug 28, 2014 5:46 PM

He couldn’t have his way so he plays the race card. How original.

  26. joebone says: Aug 28, 2014 5:49 PM

And is instagram handle is _moneyab. Might want to change it to _brokeasschumpab.

  27. pawloosa says: Aug 28, 2014 5:58 PM

    Race card??!!

    Pathetic!!

Fast forward to next year when these so called “autonomy” benefits such as being paid $$ and receiving the “forever” scholarship begin rolling this kid would be suing the school for a sum of money because he was “discrimininated”..

This will be the new norm in the coming years!!

  28. macdega says: Aug 28, 2014 6:07 PM

Rev. Al Sharpton is on line two and waiting.

  29. saintsly says: Aug 28, 2014 6:40 PM

  30. cavreconscout says: Aug 28, 2014 6:41 PM

Well that convinces me for sure.now I know all us white folks is racist and the black folks just love us to pieces

  31. sw19womble says: Aug 28, 2014 6:44 PM

Of course he’s a slave. He works for free for USC and the NCAA.

  32. ridingwithnohandlebars says: Aug 28, 2014 6:50 PM

Pretty sure slaves were not allowed to quit.

  33. jfkelly1 says: Aug 28, 2014 7:08 PM

Racist is the most over used tags going these days. Like “chicken little” yelling “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”!

  34. beerbudsnbevo says: Aug 28, 2014 7:36 PM

    Sure he is…

Coach called him into the office.

    Shackled him.

Beat him with a whip (I’m sure he still has the whip marks)

Violated his wife in front of him.

Made him work from sun up to sun down, back breaking work, with no pay.

Yep. He’s a slave just like Kanye.

  35. ducksk says: Aug 28, 2014 7:51 PM

I can’t wait til he has to work for a living….if he ever does

  36. addict2sport says: Aug 28, 2014 8:10 PM

Hopefully Money AB can find happiness playing flag football in his city’s park and recreation adult league.

  37. mydixienormus says: Aug 28, 2014 9:03 PM

    Swamp.

You mad bro? Were you always a psycho or did Florida’s sucking drive you over the edge?

Maybe you should ask your doctor if prosac’s right for you?

Yes, I liked Sark and believed his lies while he was at UW.

  38. rcali says: Aug 28, 2014 9:07 PM

“Oh Please Come Work For My Company If You Graduate!” Said by no business owner.

  39. jimmy53 says: Aug 28, 2014 11:07 PM

Notice he said he COULDN’T play for a racist–not he WOULDN’T play for a racist.

He couldn’t play for a racist because he couldn’t crack the depth chart…

  40. hozay05 says: Aug 28, 2014 11:38 PM

He’s a pussy anyways. Glad he’s off the team

  41. faaast1 says: Aug 29, 2014 7:04 AM

–Can’t wait to hear him trot out that whiney excuse, after he transfers to a national powerhouse like … Grambling.

  42. spoiledbratswhosuck says: Aug 29, 2014 7:51 AM

Big time college football is much like minor league baseball…………………………

nothing more than a training ground for the 1% who will make it big while the other 99% get nowhere without a degree, while suffering concussions, steroid use, severe arthritis later on in life or worse.

College athletes on big time programs should be offered a free education for life in return for that sacrifice.

Remember universities are mostly run by liberal white puke who hate this country.

  43. faaast1 says: Aug 29, 2014 9:10 AM

“College athletes on big time programs should be offered a free education for life in return for that sacrifice.”

    Agreed!

  44. florida727 says: Aug 29, 2014 9:43 AM

When you’re a highly sought after recruit, your highlights are shown on cable. When your highlights are shown on cable, you get offered a scholarship to USC. When you get offered a scholarship to USC, you’re expected to perform at a high level. When you’re expected to perform at a high level, you can fail and not get the playing time your entitlement mentality expects. When you fail and don’t get the playing time your entitlement mentality expects, you call your head coach a racist. Don’t call your head coach a racist. Get rid of cable. And upgrade to Direct TV.

  45. mogogo1 says: Aug 29, 2014 11:36 AM

Sounds like a screwed up kid getting the harsh realization that there won’t be millions of dollars coming his way. A senior requests to be moved to RB from CB? Sounds like he was getting desperate even before the injury.

  46. bricktop02 says: Aug 29, 2014 1:14 PM

Keep playing the race card you don’t get your way.

  47. tnfire69 says: Sep 1, 2014 10:41 PM

This young man needs to grow up and realize the power that words can have. Calling someone a racist or anything else really with no proof could ruin someone’s life. The sad thing is people play the race card so much that when someone really is a victim of racism no one believes it. Like others have said on here Brown saying he was worked “a slave” I think not. He should go to library & read up on that part on history.

It sounds like he wants all the riches of success without all the work. The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.

  48. totallysirius says: Sep 3, 2014 12:20 AM

    Worked him like a slave?

That means he had to practice and actually work instead of getting automatic playing time.
