Report: cleats disagreement preceded Gator-on-Gator fisticuffs

And now we know (a little bit more of) the rest of the story.

Earlier Tuesday it was reported that a pair of Gator teammates — quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg and defensive lineman Gerald Willis (pictured) — were involved in a fight with each other outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium Monday evening. Neither player was arrested and no charges were filed at the request of the two alleged combatants.

Mornhinweg was treated at the scene for cuts on his lips, while Willis had a cut on his chin that didn’t require treatment. A school spokesperson stated that "[i]t was a misunderstanding between teammates.”

Based on GatorBatit.net‘s account, calling it a misunderstanding may have neem a little generous on the school’s part.

The misunderstanding, according to the incident report with UFPD, was over a pair of Mornhinweg’s football cleats. Mornhinweg told a UFPD officer that his cleats had gone missing and been found in Willis’ locker. He went to confront Willis outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium about it, and the confrontation became physical.

According to Willis’ statement to police, he pushed Mornhinweg, who then struck him on the chin. Willis responded by striking Mornhinweg in the mouth.

It’s unclear if either player will face any type of punishment from the football program, with the spokesperson stating that “Coach [Will] Muschamp has not announced any discipline decisions at this time.” If the Baton Rouge Advocate‘s account is correct, at least Willis definitely won’t be punished at this time.

“Willis... is expected to play Saturday against LSU, according to a source close to the situation,” the Advocate wrote. Willis played his high school football in the state of Louisiana.

Muschamp has not spoken publicly about either this incident or the more serious one involving quarterback Treon Harris. The head coach is expected to meet with the local media Wednesday after participating in the weekly SEC coaches teleconference.
