Washington QB Cyler Miles takes voluntary leave of absence

Washington quarterback Cyler Miles will take some time off from football activities this spring. Washington head coach Chris Petersen announced the leave of absence Friday.

“Cyler is dealing with some things in his life that are more important than football, and he felt it was important to take some time away from the game,” Petersen said in a statement Friday. “We are working to support him in any way we can and hope he returns back to the football field soon.”

Miles remains enrolled in classes at Washington, and the university stressed this is not a disciplinary issue in its released statement. This is, however, the second consecutive spring Miles will miss practicing with the team. Miles was suspended from spring practices a year ago, along with wide receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow, for a violation of team rules. Miles was later reinstated by Petersen and suspended for the season opener.

With Miles taking time off, Washington will go through spring practices with three scholarship quarterbacks. K.J. Carta-Samuels, Jeff Lindquist and Jake Browning will all be available this spring. Lindquist was the only one of the three that saw any game action in 2014. He appeared in 13 games and completed 10 of 30 pass attempts for 162 yards and a touchdown. Miles was Washington’s regular starter last fall. Carta-Samuels and Browning are each four-star recruits in the previous two recruiting classes and could be the most likely to benefit from any extra snaps that come their way this spring.
