Lafayette college football player killed in car accident

It is not often we dig into the news coming out of the Patriot League, but today we do so with some somber news from Lafayette. Brian Keller, a senior tight end fo the Lafayette Leopards, has succumbed to critical injuries suffered in a car accident on Tuesday.

The 21-year old native of Somerdale, New Jersey was flown to a Trenton hospital Tuesday after his Ford Taurus left its lane to cross a grassy area and hit multiple trees, as described by New Jersey State Police. The accident occurred early Tuesday morning. He had been under care until Thursday.

“The outpouring of support over the last several days from friends, teammates, fellow student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, and other members of the Lafayette community is a testament to how greatly Brian will be missed,” a statement from Lafayette President Alison Byerly said.

Keller was responsible for 24 receptions and 320 yards last season for Lafayette.

Just last week Troy offensive lineman Corey McCullers was killed in a car accident in Alabama. McCullers was involved in a multi-vehicle accident and was ruled dead on the scene as police arrived. Missouri defensive lineman Harold Brantley was first reported to suffer serious injuries in a separate car accident, a rollover wreck. Brantley suffered a broken tibia, knee ligament damage and multiple fractured ribs. His status has since been upgraded to good following knee surgery.
