Seminole dealing with ‘cardiac issue’ vows a return

Last week brought word that Chad Mavety has been dealing with a rather serious-sounding health issue, putting his availability for the upcoming season in jeopardy. If the player has any say in the matter, though, nothing is in jeopardy.

In a Twitter missive in which he thanks all of the people who have given him an “incredible amount of support,” the Florida State offensive lineman vowed to do everything in his power to get on the field for the Seminoles in 2016. Head coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed recently that will be sidelined for all of spring practice because of what’s being described as a cardiac issue. The condition affected the rising senior in the weeks leading up to the Peach Bowl this past season and ultimately forced him out of the postseason game.

Despite the lineman’s optimism, there is no timeline for a return.

“We’re having to evaluate (him) and it may be tough,” Fisher said late last week. “It’s nothing he can control or anybody can control. It’s something we found so it’s a safety issue.”

This past season, Mavety started eight of the nine games in which he played. Five of those starts came at left guard, three at right tackle. Mavety would’ve entered spring practice penciled in as a starter at either position.
