Father of SMU player murdered

The father of SMU’s record-setting quarterback-turned-receiver Justin Willis was shot and killed during a home invasion Friday night, the Dallas Morning News is reporting.

46-year-old Samuel Willis was visiting a home in the Dallas area when an unknown number of assailants broke into the residence and, ultimately, fatally shot him.

The owner of the home reportedly exchanged gunfire with the alleged perpetrators; the home owner was unharmed in the incident.

Over two pounds of marijuana was found at the residence, but police officials would not say if the drugs played a role in the break-in. One source told The Morning News that the house belonged to the elder Willis’ cousin.

Justin Willis was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2006, and set a school record for touchdowns in 2007 with 21. The senior moved to receiver last season, and finished with 14 receptions and 143 yards.
