Heels on the verge of losing big-time recruit to MLB

Four days after joining the his North Carolina teammates in Chapel Hill, Donavan Tate has left the Tar Heels’ training camp.

Possibly for good.

According to a press release issued by the school, Tate left camp this morning to consider an offer to play baseball with the San Diego Padres.

Tate was the No. 3 overall pick in this June’s Major League Baseball draft. He was also a highly-touted quarterback coming out of high school and signed a Letter of Intent with UNC last February.

He arrived in Chapel Hill last Saturday and attended quarterback meetings and three days of practice before leaving Wednesday morning.

While the release didn’t say, it’s obvious that Tate and the Padres are very close to -- if not already reached an -- agreement on a multi-million dollar contract.

The Padres have until August 17 to get a deal done with Tate; if not, he would not be draft eligible for two years.
