Barkley kinda, sorta improves on first scrimmage performance

It likely won’t be confused with some type of aerial assault for the ages, but Southern Cal’s Matt Barkley had an improved performance to show for his effort coming out of yesterday’s scrimmage.

Somewhat.

The true freshman completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards and an interception. While that stat line isn’t exactly earth-shattering, it’s positively Marino-esque when compared to the 5-13-109 line he put up in the first scrimmage last Monday.

All in all, Barkley seemed to feel he made some strides from the previous scrimmage.

I think I made a lot of progress,” Barkley said. “Minus a play or so, I think today was a very good day for us. I felt really calm out there and confident. There were just a couple of plays out there, a couple of third downs, that would’ve made a big change in the game.

“It takes 11. There were a couple of dropped balls, a couple of bad passes, a couple penalties. I really think we’re just an inch away from being great.”

Head coach Pete Carroll said Barkley “played good, solid football.”
