Incumbent wraps up Cal’s starting QB spot

Last season, Kevin Riley started nine games at quarterback for the Cal Golden Bears.

This season, Riley will get a chance at a repeat performance as the junior held off sophomore Brock Mansion to win the Golden Bears’ starting job.

“Kevin Riley is going to be the starter,” head coach Jeff Tedford said. “They’ve all played really well, and we feel very fortunate to be in a position to have three quality quarterbacks.

“But, Kevin is experienced with game situations and the offense. He’s been more accurate and consistent throwing the ball. It’s evident by all the things going on at the line of scrimmage that Kevin is comfortable with the amount of offense that goes in every day. He’s used to game-planning and does a nice job with that.”

Riley lost his starting job last to senior Nate Longshore just prior to Cal’s bowl game, which, for all intents and purposes, left the job wide open entering spring practice.

However, since then, Riley had pulled ahead to a comfortable lead in the battle, effectively turning it into a matter of when, not if, he would be named the starter.
