Holtz says UVA got beat by a buncha ‘Marys’

From putting Notre Dame into the BcS title game to Charlie Weis being the most underrated coach in college football to his own personal “Clausen For Heisman ’09" campaign, this has not exactly been a critically-acclaimed start to the 2009 season for ESPN pundit and Irish deep-throater Lou Holtz.

However, his latest stumbling foray into the art of speaking publicly may be the most damning yet not involving Touchdown Jesus.

As relayed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Holtz was slated to speak to a whole gaggle of student-athletes at Kent State, his alma mater.

Beforehand, though, Holtz spoke to the KSU coaching staff and players in the Flashes football program.

In his pre-speech speech, Holtz was attempting to give the underdogs a pep talk as they head into a showdown with Boston College. Tried to tell them how Div. 1-AA William & Mary went into the fire and came out with a win over 1-A Virginia.

Instead, he managed to pull a WTF belittling trifecta: belittled W&M’s win, belittled W&M’s players and belittled UVA for losing to a bunch of sissy boys.

“Virginia lost to William & Mary [last weekend], and they had more Marys than Williams,” Holtz said.

Yeah. OK. Just stop it already. Enough is enough.

There are only so many banana peels someone should so publicly slip on before he’s politely escorted out of the rabbit hole and shown the exit. Holtz’s quota was surpassed before this season; now, it’s embarrassing to think that the hole seemingly has no bottom.

I would never call for anyone’s job, but it might be time for the WWL to put Holtz out to pasture and out of his misery.

Or the viewer’s misery. Whichever comes first in the eyes of the ratings.

They did it with Emmitt after a couple of years; they need to do the same with their latest weekly embarrassment.
