Prez: ‘FSU does not make coaching changes in the middle of the season’

At least for now, Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden is safe. What the future will hold following the 2009 season, however, is still very much up in the air.

Outgoing Florida State president T.K. Wetherell issued a statement saying very plainly that Bowden will not be fired, stepping down, however you want to couch it, during the season.

“FSU does not make coaching changes in the middle of the season,” Wetherell said. “What message would it send to anyone -- friend or foe -- to do that at this time? ...

“I have spoken with numerous fans, alumni, boosters, supporters and staff, and I will make a final report to the full Board of Trustees at the end of the year. Until then, FSU will concentrate on supporting our team and student-athletes in winning as many games as possible. Neither the university nor I will have further comment on this matter until then.”

In other coaching-related FSU news, the Tallahassee Democrat is reporting that a contract for head coach-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher is currently in the works.

A source told the paper that the deal would likely be for three years, and would grant the offensive coordinator the power to his own coaching staff at the end of the 2009 season.
