Jumbo 727 lands in Ann Arbor

Normally, we wouldn’t give two spits about a Div. 1-A team easily handling a Div. 1-AA opponent.

However, what Michigan did today to Delaware St. deserves special mention.

The Wolverines won, as expected. They won handily -- 63-6 -- as expected. Those 727 yards of total offense UM put up? Uhhh, yeah, not expected.

But, that’s just what the Wolverines did, putting up a school-record total yardage number in their win. Additionally, the Wolverines gained 442 of those yards in the first half -- also a school record.

And it’s not like Michigan was trying to put up gaudy numbers either. Starting quarterback Tate Forcier played in just one series, the first one. Backup Denard Robinson threw just four passes, although two went for touchdowns. Michigan used their fifth-string QB in this game, for the love of Mouse Davis.

Michigan rushed for 461 yards in the game. They were led by 5'6", 168-pound freshman Vincent Smith -- that’s what he’s listed at, incidentally -- who turned in a 17-carry, 166-yard performance. After rushing for 35 yards on nine carries heading into this game.

So, yeah, hope Delaware State enjoyed the $550,000 payday they “earned” after giving up a home game against a like opponent for a road game against someone far superior.
