Kelly tweets confirmation of Irish interest

Brian Kelly has confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in college football -- he’ll interview for the head-coaching vacancy at Notre Dame.

And Kelly made the announcement the way all of the cool kids are doing it these days. Via Twitter.

According to the Cincinnati head coach’s Twitter account, Kelly informed his players today of the Irish’s interest in him, and that he will talk to the school about that interest.

“Just informed our team that Notre Dame has contacted me and I will listen to what they have to say,” Kelly said in a posting made about 4 p.m. ET this afternoon.

Two of Kelly’s players -- safety Aaron Webster and wide receiver Mardy Gilyard -- told ESPN.com that Kelly spoke to the team last Thursday and said there was nothing to the rumors attaching his name to the Irish opening..

“He said, ‘It’s not an issue; I’m not going there,’ ” Webster said. “He said, ‘I love Cincinnati, and I’m staying here.’”

Gilyard confirmed as much, telling the website that Kelly said "'[a]ll this foolishness about me trying to go somewhere, that’s just foolish,’ Coach Kelly, he made us strongly feel [he wasn’t leaving]. It’s almost like when your mom tells you the sky is blue, and you just know it’s blue. You don’t even have to look outside.”

Gilyard might want to consider doing his own sky check this week because it’s looking mighty green from where I’m standing.
