Confirmed: Buckeye duo suspended for Rose Bowl

It’s been rumored for a week or so that wide receiver Ray Small and defensive lineman Rob Rose would not be available for Ohio State’s Rose Bowl appearance.

Today, head coach Jim Tressel confirmed the rumors as fact.

According to the coach, the seniors were suspended for violating unspecified team rules, ending both their 2009 seasons and collegiate careers in one fell swoop.

“It is especially disappointing when young people lose the privilege to compete, especially because it is the Rose Bowl and they are seniors,” Tressel said today.

“Nevertheless, the Buckeyes must press on, and the youngsters (Small and Rose) as well.”

The loss of Small, coupled with fellow receiver Duron Carter being academically ineligible for the bowl game, has chipped into the Buckeyes’ depth at the WR position.
