Texas assistants: No raises for you!

Even as Texas is the most profitable football program in the country -- by far -- and is coming off an appearance in the national championship game, the assistants on Mack Brown‘s coaching staff won’t be reaping any of those profits this offseason.

The economic dip that most everyone is still in the midst of is especially pinching the nation’s institutions of higher learning. Texas Governor Rick Perry has called for UT to cut 5 percent of its state-funded budget, so it would be bad form for the athletic department to start throwing even more money at its football coaches.

Even though, again, the Longhorns pull in more cash than any other school in the country.

Last year at this time, Texas assistants other than the two coordinators received raises of 3 or 4 percent across the board.

This year, they’ll have to “settle” for a one-time bonus of 9 percent of their salary for the appearance in a BcS game, plus between $3,000 and $5,000 for taking home the Big 12 conference title.

Those bonuses are written into the coach’s current contracts. And the UT coaching staff, even without a raise, will remain one of the highest-paid staffs in the country.

It’s possible, the Austin American-Statesman reports, that the assistants could receive raises when September rolls around.
