Miami (Ohio) turns Signing Day into a live event

In what seems like a natural progression for the most under-the-radar big day on the sporting calendar, Miami (Ohio) is live-streaming Signing Day for six hours with “RedHawk Recruiting Live.”

Billed by the school’s Sports Information Department as “the first worldwide webcast of its kind,” The Miami website will “tell an international audience about its 2010 recruiting class.”

(RedHawk football presumably has gigantic clout in Eastern Europe... or something.)

Anchored by radio personalities Steve Baker and Tim Bray, the RedHawks will be reporting Signing Day live, following every fax that comes into the football office, and will let fans send questions to head coach Mike Haywood’s Twitter page, where the head coach will respond on the hour. The show will also highlight 2010 signees for the soccer, field hockey, and women’s track and field teams.

I don’t think many of us necessarily think “Miami-Ohio football” and “internet sensation,” but I think it’s a great idea for a program that’s trying to put itself on the map, and probably will lead to premiere programs streaming live Signing Day in the years to come.

Coming off a 1-11 season where they lost seven games by over 20 points, the RedHawks had to find some way to get some positive momentum.
