Hawkeyes backfield depth thinned a bit

A potentially overflowing backfield situation in Iowa has found itself a little less crowded this morning following the departure of a player who at one time was a highly-touted prospect, multiple media outlets are reporting.

Jeff Brinson, one of the highest-rated members of Kirk Ferentz‘s 2008 recruiting class, has decided to transfer from the school. Brinson’s father is suffering from heart issues, so Brinson is officially transferring to be closer to him and his St. Petersburg, Fla., residence.

Brinson was a redshirt in 2008, then had just one carry in 2009 courtesy of a foot injury.

Freshman Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegh carried the running game load for the Hawkeyes last season, rushing for nearly 1,500 yards between them. Jewel Hampton, who was expected to replace Shonn Greene in the starting lineup last season, should return to full health in 2010 after missing 2009 with a knee injury.
