Sooner prez: OU received SEC invite

It should come as no surprise that Texas A&M received an invitation from the SEC before ultimately deciding to stick with the Big 12(-2).

What may come as somewhat of a mild surprise is the fact that another school in the Big 12 whose name doesn’t rhyme with “Schmexas” received one as well.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday morning, Oklahoma president David Boren revealed that his school -- along with the Aggies -- had received an invite from the SEC as well as the Pac-10. Boren said the offer wasn’t really considered due to the fact that Texas and Oklahoma State weren’t included.

An SEC spokesperson told the Associated Press that he was “not in a position to comment” on Boren’s statements.

OU’s decision to turn down an offer from the SEC hardly nudges the needle on the shock meter as many associated with the university have publicly stated that they would follow Texas wherever they went conference-wise.

Still, it’s somewhat head-scratching that a pair of schools would turn down a conference flush with both revenue and stability, instead opting to remain in one that’s far from stable and even further away financially. Then again, big money or not, the competition in the SEC could’ve caused both schools to give the Big 12 another chance.
