Ex-USC WR Patterson not yet cleared to play for Buffs

Colorado opened their latest -- and last? -- summer camp under head coach Dan Hawkins Thursday, but they did so without Travon Patterson.

Patterson was one of a handful of USC players who took advantage of stipulations in the NCAA sanctions against the Trojans that allows juniors or seniors to transfer from the school without sitting out a year.

But, because Colorado joined the Pac-10 this past June even as they won’t begin actual competition in the conference until 2011 at the earliest, there are questions coming from the league, sources told the Boulder Daily Camera, about whether Patterson should be allowed to transfer to the Buffaloes without sitting out a year.

The paper writes that the Pac-10 “is apparently concerned over applying its transfer rules consistently to all members regardless of their membership status.” Patterson is a senior, so he would not be a member of the Buffs program even if they were to begin league play in 2011.

For his part, Hawkins doesn’t seem the least bit concerned that Patterson won’t ultimately end up in a Colorado uniform this season.

“I don’t know,” Hawkins said of when Patterson would practice. “We’re getting through a paperwork deal on him. So we’re just waiting on other folks to get that signed off.”

Until then, however, Patterson will not be eligible to practice with the Buffaloes.
