Tuberville two weeks away from naming starting QB

Neither Taylor Potts nor Steven Sheffield has separated themselves from the other in the battle to become Texas Tech’s starting quarterback.

Two weeks from now, head coach Tommy Tuberville is hoping that will have changed.

The Red Raiders will hold their second scrimmage of the summer on Aug. 21. At that point in time, Tuberville and his staff will -- hopefully -- sit down and make a decision between Potts and Sheffield.

It’ll be about after at least two scrimmages,” Tuberville said after Sunday’s practice. “And that’s probably about all we’ll go. I want to give the starting quarterback at least a week or a week and a half work with the first-team to get his timing down. Let him know that he’s the guy. But he’s got to fight to keep it. There’s obviously going to be competition throughout the year.”

Thanks to injuries to both players, neither were available for spring practice, which only helped to further complicate Tuberville’s decision.
