Wednesday deadline for determining UCLA’s starting QB

Bothered by a strained oblique muscle throughout most of summer camp, it’s uncertain whether starting quarterback Kevin Prince will be available for UCLA’s opener against Kansas State a week from today.

Come midweek, that uncertainty will go away one way or the other.

Following Friday’s practice, head coach Rick Neuheisel told the media that Wednesday will be D-Day for deciding the availability of last year’s starter for this year’s opening weekend.

“I’m going to let a few more days go by before we make that decision,” Neuheisel told the Los Angeles Daily News. “Coaches always say you want them there by Wednesday, and that’s what I’d say. Obviously, you’d like to see him earlier.”

If Prince is not healthy enough to go, Richard Brehaut would replace the sophomore in the starting lineup. A sophomore himself, Brehaut drew praise from his head coach for his performance during Friday’s light scrimmage.

“I thought he was really good again,” Neuheisel said of Brehaut’s performance in the scrimmage, “I think he had a TD pass, completed 65-70 percent of his passes. (He) looked very sharp.”
