Houston receiver sues C-USA, Marshall

It’s Patrick Edwards’ money and he wants it now.

Nearly two years after Edwards suffered a gruesome broken leg in a nationally televised game against Marshall, the Houston receiver is finally taking action.

“I feel like I need to protect my rights -- and do what’s right,” said Edwards. “I just feel like I shouldn’t have let it go this far, but I finally got it done: Do what’s right.”

The lawsuit claims that Marshall failed to fulfill its obligation of creating and maintaining a safe playing environment. Edwards ran into a metal cart positioned past the endzone while attempting to a catch a touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Joseph. The collision caused a compound fracture in his right leg and Edwards missed the rest of the 2008 season.

But recovery time for the second-team All-C-USA performer was surprisingly short. Edwards made his dramatic return to football the next season and caught 85 passes for 1,021 yards. Now, with X-Rays coming back negative, his attention turns to the lawsuit.

“We are aware of the lawsuit and have advised our attorneys,” said asst. C-USA commish Courtney Morrison Archer. “It was an unfortunate accident and we are glad that Patrick has recovered so well from it. We will have no further comment regarding ongoing litigation.”
