Neuheisel won’t commit to Prince as his starting QB

After being limited for a good portion of summer camp with a strained oblique muscle, the start of the 2010 season has been beyond a struggle for UCLA’s Kevin Prince.

Now, the sophomore might find himself on the bench come the weekend.

Head coach Rick Neuheisel was very non-committal Sunday regarding who will be his starting quarterback when the Bruins take the field Saturday against No. 23 Houston.

We haven’t made that determination yet,” Neuheisel said according to the Los Angeles Daily News. “We’ll see. We’ll watch practice. The effectiveness of the quarterback position is critical, so we want to make sure we have someone out there who knows what he’s doing and does it well.

“At the end of the day, as long as (Prince’s) health is good, it comes down to performance. To date, the performance hasn’t been what it needs to be.”

UCLA has stumbled out of the gate at 0-2, and Prince’s production -- or lack thereof -- is a big reason. Prince has completed just 15-of-38 passes for 159 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He’s the 111th-rated quarterback in the country in passer rating; there are 120 teams in Div. 1-A.

If Neuheisel opts for a change, Richard Brehaut would become the starter. Brehaut replaced on a couple of occasions in 2009 due to injury, and played Saturday after Prince was yanked in the loss to Stanford.
