Pitt’s Romeus undergoes successful back surgery

As expected, Greg Romeus underwent surgery Thursday to repair a lingering disk issue in his back.

Now all the Pittsburgh football program can do is cross their fingers and hope that the procedure takes and the lingering ceases.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, yesterday’s surgery to repair the herniated disk in Romeus’ back was labeled a success. The reigning Big East co-Defensive Player of the Year should begin rehabbing in the next week or two with an eye toward returning at some point before the end of the 2010 season.

Everything went as planned,” coach Dave Wannstedt said. “Now, it’s just a matter of healing and rehab. I would think a week or two until things heal up, and then, the rehab starts.”

If the rehab goes as planned, Romeus should return around six weeks from now. That timeline would put him back on the field in early November, enabling the defensive end to play in the final four games of the season plus a bowl game.

The thing is, though, should Romeus even return at all? The senior is by and large considered a top-ten talent in next April’s NFL draft. It would seem to be a risky proposition -- especially given the nature of the injury -- to return at all this year, but it appears Romeus will at least give it a shot.
