Fulmer on Gophers: ‘It’s a place where you can compete’

Yesterday brought word that Minnesota might have an interest in Phillip Fulmer as their next head coach.

Today, brings word that, somewhat unbelievably, the former Tennessee head coach may be willing to reciprocate the reported interest.

While not coming right out and stating that he’s thrown his hat into the Gopher coaching ring, Fulmer seemed to indicate it’s a job with some upside. And one that, reading into his comments, he may consider if afforded the opportunity.

“Minnesota has great potential, and with its new facilities it’s a place you could recruit to,’” Fulmer told the Knoxville News Sentinel on Tuesday night. “I believe it’s a place where you can compete.”

Fulmer, the paper writes, was non-committal when asked if he has had contact with the school.

It’s understandable why Minnesota would have an interest in Fulmer -- 152-52 speaks for itself -- but it’s harder to see what’s in this Gophers job for the coach. Apparently, however, there’s something there Fulmer sees that’s to his liking. If for nothing more, it keeps his name out there and reminds other schools that he still has a desire to return to coaching.
