Tough break: Greg McElroy not selected for Rhodes Scholarship

It was a year-long process for Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy to apply, interview and become one of 12 finalists for the Rhodes Scholarship, but in the end, it just wasn’t in the cards. McElroy was not selected as one of the two recipients for the prestigious scholarship, which was given to students from the Naval Academy and Harvard.

“We gave it our best shot, going up against a few MIT students, a Yale grad, a Harvard grad, a Naval Academy grad, I’m just proud to have been able to make it to this point and represent Alabama for that,” McElroy said.

The fifth-year senior already has his undergraduate degree and, now that he will not be studying at Oxford, plans on attending law school after pursuing an NFL career.

“If that [the NFL] doesn’t work out, hopefully Northwestern Law School, depending on where else I apply.”

Last year, Florida State safety Myron Rolle received the scholarship.

Obviously, not receiving the scholarship is disappointing for McElroy, but you have to admire a kid who, in an era of agents and dropouts, has taken the opportunity given to him to excel off the field. Well played, sir.
