Alabama’s OC interviews for Colorado job

For the fifth time since the job came open, Colorado has interviewed a candidate for the vacancy. For the first time, though, it’s a candidate with no direct ties to the university.

According to the Denver Post, Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain has interviewed for the Buffaloes’ vacant head-coaching job. The paper did not say when the interview took place.

McElwain just completed his third regular season as the Tide’s offensive coordinator. Prior to that, the 48-year-old coach had spent time at the collegiate level at Fresno State, Michigan State, Montana State and Eastern Washington. He also spent 2006 as the Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach.

The news of McElwain’s interview comes the same day that it was reported Air Force’s Troy Calhoun had pulled his name from consideration. Calhoun joined Mike Bellotti in saying thanks but no thanks to the school.

The Post had reported earlier today that CU could name a head coach as early as the end of this week.

In addition to McElwain, former CU players Eric Bieniemy and Jon Embree; former CU player, longtime CU assistant and current CU Brian Cabral; and former CU head coach Bill McCartney have all interviewed for the position with athletic director Mike Bohn and/or the seven-member search committee.

It’s believed that Bieniemy may be the so-called front-runner, or is at least being pushed heavily by some associated with the program.
