Randy Shannon would pick up if Gophers called

Just four days after being bucked by Miami, Randy Shannon is already primed to get back on the coaching horse.

Shannon told Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com that he’s still interested in coaching in general and, specifically, he would be open to listening to Minnesota regarding their coaching vacancy.

There’s no word on whether the Gophers would be interested in Shannon, but it would seem obvious that there should be at some point in the very near future. If there’s not already

As noted by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Shannon would fit athletic director Joel Maturi‘s idea of a “suitable” replacement for Tim Brewster. Maturi has publicly stated he would like to hire a person with experience as a head coach, and one who’s been successful while in charge of his own program; while Shannon’s 28-22 mark with the Hurricanes got him fired there, such a mark would get statues built and streets named in his honor if he reached that level in Minneapolis.

Add in the academic success of his players in Miami -- as well as cleaning up the off-field issues that had plagued the program -- and Shannon would appear to be a no-brainer hire for Maturi and the Gophers. At the very least, it’s something that Maturi should very seriously explore if they want a shot at turning their moribund program around.
