Kent State reportedly hires Ohio State assistant

The search for Kent State’s new coach appears to be over.

An announcement will officially be made Monday, but school sources say Ohio State associate head coach and receivers coach Darrell Hazell will be named the Golden Flashes’ 20th head coach.

Hazell would not confirm if he was offered the job, but insisted he would be with Ohio State through the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas. “It should be interesting to see what happens Monday,” Hazell said earlier this evening.

The long-time assistant has been at Ohio State since 2004.

Hazell reportedly won the job over Alabama wide receivers coach Curt Cignetti, Texas wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy and West Virginia offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen, who was unceremoniously canned by AD Oliver Luck to bring in Oklahoma State OC and coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen.
