Southern Miss WR DeAndre Brown reportedly headed to NFL

It’s long been thought that DeAndre Brown would be three and done at Southern Miss.

According to one report, that is indeed the case.

ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad reported late Wednesday night that the Southern Miss wide receiver has informed coaches he’s decided to forego his final year of eligibility and make himself available for the 2011 NFL draft. While that may ultimately be the case, there’s one coach the junior has yet to inform of his intentions.

“He’s still got time before he has to make it official,” offensive coordinator Blake Anderson said. “I understand that he’s trying to see where he’s going to fall. I don’t know if he’s put his name in for it yet. That’s not been confirmed to me.”

After catching 114 passes for 1,902 yards and 21 touchdowns, Brown was hampered by a leg injury that forced him out of more than half this season’s game and slowed him in most of the ones he did play in. In the six games he did play in this year, Brown had 19 receptions for 284 yards and three touchdowns.

At 6-6, 239 pounds, his size and athletic ability will certainly make him attractive to most NFL teams, although there could be some questioning his ability to stay healthy -- including this gruesome leg injury two years ago -- and his work ethic/attitude. If this report is accurate, Brown would become the third receiver with eligibility remaining -- or with the opportunity to gain another year of eligibility -- in the past four days to leave early for the NFL.
