Kevin Wilson on losing assistants: ‘It is what it is’

When Danny Hope lost an assistant coach to another job last week, the Purdue head coach was not shy in publicly voicing his displeasure over losing an assistant he’d hired less than a month ago.

Kevin Wilson can certainly feel Hope’s pain as Indiana’s new coach has lost four assistants he had hired since taking over the Hoosiers in early December.

Instead of criticizing the coach’s who’ve left, however, Wilson, at least publicly, is attempting to put the best spin possible on the situation.

It is what it is, you gotta deal with it,” Wilson told the Hoosier Times. "… I think we hired some good guys. Unfortunately, they thought they had some other opportunities. My deal as a coach, you gotta do what’s best for you, your family and your career. … A couple of them have tremendous futures. I guess they think the grass is greener somewhere else. That’s their choice.”

Wilson has filled three of the four vacancies on his staff. The fourth, created when running backs coach Jemal Singleton left for a position at Oklahoma State, should be filled this week, Wilson said.

Singleton, incidentally, was on the job less than a week when he left the Hoosiers. And Hope thought he had it bad.
