Dammit. Here we go again.
The last time we heard from Harvey Updyke, the alleged/admitted poisoner of Auburn’s historic Toomer’s Corner oaks was allegedly getting beat up following a hearing on state charges for said poisoning. A month later, “Al from Dadeville” may have a lot more to worry about than a bump or a scratch on his head.
Or some state charges.
By way of the Birmingham News, Updyke’s attorney told a Birmingham television station during an interview Tuesday that his client is now facing six federal charges as well as a felony criminal mischief charge at the state level. The paper writes that the attorney, Glennon Threatt, did not provide details during the interview as to the federal charges his client’s facing and had not yet returned calls seeking clarification.
Updyke was arrested back in February after calling into the Paul Finebaum radio program -- as “Al from Dadeville” -- and bragging that he had poisoned the Toomer’s trees with a herbicide called Spike 80 after Auburn’s win over Alabama last year. Updyke has repeatedly claimed that he’s a lifelong Tide fan.
Six months after being poisoned, it remains uncertain whether or not the trees will survive.
