Academic status of five-star Sooner signee? To be determined

On National Signing Day, Oklahoma received a signed Letter of Intent from Trey Metoyer, a five-star player who Rivals.com rated as the No. 2 wide receiver in the country and, perhaps more importantly, the No. 2 player in the state of Texas.

The fruits of that prime picking of the ultimate Big 12 football border, however, could be delayed.

Metoyer has yet to qualify academically, and must receive an “A” in one course and a “B” in another at a Texas junior college he’s currently attending in order to qualify to play in 2011. As expected, Metoyer is confident he’ll pass the academic muster even as he’s put himself in the position to have his academic muster in doubt just a couple of weeks before the official start of his collegiate career.

“If I get them, I am on my way up there,” Metoyer told the Daily Oklahoman. “Everything is going well. I’m going to class every day and passing my tests and passing my daily grades, so it is looking good.”

Regardless of how well he does in the JUCO classes, however, Metoyer will likely miss a substantial portion of his first summer camp as a true freshman.

As explained by the Oklahoman, the semester at Tyler (Tex.) Junior College Metoyer is currently enrolled in, and will determine his immediate college football future, ends on Aug. 11. The Sooners will begin camp on Aug. 4, which means, with two-a-days in the early portion factored in, Metoyer will likely miss at least a total of 10 practice sessions.

Rivals.com rated Metoyer as the No. 12 player at any position in the country prior to his February signing with OU. And listed Dez Bryant as the player “Trey Metoyer reminds us of...” for what that’s worth.
