Sherman completed, A&M takes care of DC contractually

A couple of days after upgrading Mike Sherman‘s contract both in length and compensation, Texas A&M has done half the same thing to Sherman’s defensive coordinator’s deal as well. And, as my wife would say, it’s the most important half that was taken care of.

The school announced Monday that, while he didn’t receive an extension, Tim DeRuyter will earn an additional $225,000 over the next two years above what was originally included in the contract he signed in 2010. After originally being scheduled to earn $425,000 this year and $450,000 next, the second-year coordinator will make $550,000 in each of the next two seasons.

DeRuyter would likely become the third-highest-paid coordinator in the conference behind, of course a pair of Texas coordinators; UT offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin and defensive coordinator Manny Diaz will each make $650,000 in their first year at the school.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Sherman requested the raise for DeRuyter, as well as a smaller one for strength & conditioning coach Dave Kennedy, because the coaches had been receiving job offers from other schools.

In DeRuyter’s first year with the Aggies after leaving Air Force, A&M finished 55th in the country in total defense (364.3 yards per game) and 34th in scoring defense (21.9) in 2010. In 2009, the defense finished 105th (426.3) and 105th (33.5) in those categories, respectively.
