OU still on top, LSU & Bama flip-flop in AP poll

Alabama opened the season No. 2 in the Associated Press poll, but were leapfrogged by LSU after the Tigers’ Week 1 win over Oregon. The following week, the Tide grabbed the No. 2 spot back from their SEC West rival.

A week later? The two teams have traded spots yet again.

With Oklahoma obviously holding serve at No. 1 following their win over then-No. 5 Florida State, LSU is back in the No. 2 hole thanks to their road win over now-unranked Mississippi State. Alabama, of course, comes in at No. 3, followed by Boise State (No. 4) and Stanford (No. 5).

The remainder of the Top 10 is, in order, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Oregon.

South Carolina fell out of the Top 10 to No. 12 following their narrow 24-21 win over Navy.

Michigan State had the honor of suffering the biggest free fall of the week, tumbling all the way out of the rankings after coming into the weekend at No. 15. FSU fell six spots to No. 11.

Texas made the biggest move of the week, going from No. 23 to No. 19. TCU jumped three spots to No. 20.

In addition to both schools that utilize the MSU acronyms, Ohio State (then-No. 16), Auburn (No. 21) and Arizona State (No. 22) all dropped out of the rankings following losses. Incidentally, this is the first time the Buckeyes have been unranked in the AP since Nov. 20, 2004, a streak of 103 straight poll appearances; that had been the longest such streak in the country. Alabama at 53 now holds that distinction.

Replacing those five teams in the Top 25 are Clemson (No. 21), Michigan (No. 22), USC (No. 23), Illinois (No. 24) and Georgia Tech (No. 25).
