LSU feels No. 1 love from the AP

The coaches didn’t have the sense to pull the trigger on it, but the media (rightfully) did.

After beating three ranked teams in non-home games during the first four weeks of the 2011 season, LSU has climbed to the top spot in the Associated Press poll.

The Tigers were named No. 1 on 42 of the 60 AP ballots, up from just 14 the week before. Oklahoma, last week’s No. 1, saw their first-place votes fall from 37 to 12 to come in at No. 2. No. 3 Alabama (5) and No. 4 Boise State (1) were the only other teams to garner first-place votes.

Below the Top Five, there was a significant amount of movement.

On the strength of their win over then-No. 8 Texas A&M, Oklahoma State moved up two spots to No. 5. As a result of the Cowboys’ climb, Stanford and Wisconsin dropped one spot each to No. 6 and No. 7, respectively. Nebraska (No. 8 ) and Oregon (No. 9) each moved up a spot, while South Carolina climbed two spots to round out the Top 10.

Florida State took by far the biggest tumble, going from No. 11 to No. 23. Conversely, the team that beat FSU, Clemson, was the biggest riser of the week, moving from No. 21 to No. 13.

Georgia Tech climbed from No. 25 to No. 21, while Florida and Michigan each moved up three spots -- the former to No. 12, the latter to No. 19.

Arizona State reentered the rankings at No. 25, replacing Michigan State (No. 23).
