RGIII not enough to give Baylor first Big 12 win

The stat was everywhere following Baylor’s victory last week over Rice. Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III had more touchdowns (13) than incompletions (12). Today, Griffin exited with 18 touchdowns to 20 incompletions, and threw his first interception in 171 attempts.

Still, those are video game numbers.

But something tells me Griffin would rather not have a single completion if it meant his team was 4-0 and 1-0 in Big 12 conference play. Instead, No. 15 Baylor failed to go on the road and knock off Kansas State, losing 36-35.

Griffin was still great -- 23-of-31 for 346 yards and five touchdowns -- but the Bears couldn’t get a ground game working at all and defense, once again, proved to be an issue. Without getting into too much coachspeak, Baylor showed it can’t be a one-man team if it wants to finish near the top of the Big 12.

It also showed you can never count out Kansas State coach Bill Snyder.

Baylor looked lackadaisical at times -- especially with some of the playcalling/execution in the final minutes -- while K-State played up a level.

Going forward, you have to wonder what RGIII’s level of play is going to be. The month of September was good for the junior, but road games at Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are just a couple of weeks away. Make no mistake: Griffin is still an early season Heisman favorite, but Baylor’s success or failure can’t just be on Griffin’s shoulders; his teammates will have to step up their productivity as well.
